Pay, Pat, and Clawback: Incentivizing Service Providers’ Participation in On-Demand Digital Platforms

ABSTRACT. A critical governance challenge for on-demand digital platforms is increasing service provider participation. In this research, we design novel incentive structures, accounting for the unique features of these platforms. Through twelve micro-randomized trials conducted with a major on-demand platform, we examine how combining monetary and non-monetary incentives within a loss-aversion framework could motivate service providers to increase their participation. We find that non-monetary incentives actually inhibit the impact of monetary incentives on participation when offered together. Additionally, unlike traditional work settings, loss-aversion frameworks only enhance the effectiveness of non-monetary incentives. We provide theoretical explanations and empirical insights for these unexpected findings. This research offers actionable insights for on-demand platforms aiming to effectively mobilize and sustain service provider participation to meet real-time, stochastic demand.
